Department of Pediatric and Adolescent Medicine

Information for patients

The Department of Pediatrics and Adolescent Medicine (KDDL) is one of the largest pediatric clinics in Prague due to the number of beds and outpatient activities in all pediatric subspecializations. The clinic provides care at all levels (resuscitation, intensive, standard and rehabilitation) for children of all ages, from immature newborns to adolescents, including efforts for a broader concept of patient care (social pediatrics clinic, clinic for complex youth issues) . Almost half of KDDL's clients are outside Prague, these patients are mostly sent to the clinic at the request of general practitioners for children and adolescents and are in the care of outpatient specialists or are hospitalized in inpatient wards. The obligatory catchment area of KDDL is the area of Prague 1, 2 and partly Prague 4.

The clinic also has a day hospital, where more demanding outpatient procedures requiring several hours at the clinic (infusion, transfusion, stress tests and some diagnostic instrumental procedures) are performed.

  • Intensive care department (ICU) - Patients who require demanding medical and nursing care, often with the support of basic vital functions, are admitted here. The age spectrum of patients here ranges from immature neonatal age to adolescent patients (up to 19 years of age). The ward has two places available for accompanying children (rooming-in) and possibly two more beds outside the ward, for accommodation of one of the parents at the clinic.
  • Department of infants and toddlersdeals with a wide range of issues of acute and chronic diseases of children from birth to 2-3 years of age. This department is also the only center in the Czech Republic dealing with the diagnosis and treatment of inherited metabolic disorders in children from birth to 19 years of age. The department has a total of 21 beds for children + 18 beds for accompanying children. Standard rooms are double and there are two above-standard rooms in the department, which are single and are equipped with toilet, shower, TV and refrigerator. The price per night in an superior room is 800 CZK.
  • Department of older children and adolescentsdeals with the issue of acute and chronic diseases of children from 2-3 years to 19 years of age. This department specializes in rheumatology, gastroenterology and eating disorders. The ward has a total of 35 beds, depending on the occupancy of the ward, you can accept a child.

There are two superior rooms, equipped with TV, refrigerator, shared toilet and shower, whose price is 600 CZK / night and since September 2012 there is a separate superior room with private toilet and shower for 800 CZK / night. Unfortunately, above-standard rooms cannot be booked in advance in any ward for capacity reasons, before the start of hospitalization. Payment for an above-standard room is made at the end of the hospitalization - in cash at the ward (preferably the exact amount), by card at the outpatient clinic or, if applicable, by voucher.

The possibility is free at the ICU department and partly at the infant departmentWIFI connection. In the older children's ward, it is possible for older children to use one computer in the common playroom with internet connection.

Inpatients may have their own cosmetics and clothing, and if the child uses disposable diapers, they must be taken with them. If the patient is taking special medicines for a long time, he hands them over to the nurse upon admission to the ward, receives them during his stay and gets them back when he is released. In special cases, the attending physician may allow the parent to administer these medications to the child, but consent to the actual administration of the product must be signed and the medication must be locked in the bedside table throughout the stay.

Medical visittakes place in all wards every day in the morning (between 8:00 and 10:00) and an afternoon visit according to the operation of the ward and the condition of patients. For patients who are hospitalized for the examination and who are accompanied on the ward, an afternoon walk is possible after agreement with the doctor.

Visitsfor family members and other loved ones, they are in the Infant Ward daily from 12:30 to 18:30 and in the Department of Older Children daily from 15:00 to 18:30. Visits to the ICU are individual in agreement with the attending physician and are governed primarily by the patient's health and the operation of the department.

The written consent of the child's legal representative is required for the hospitalization of the child. Furthermore, some other informed consents to examinations or therapies are required - all information will be given to patients or their parents (the child's legal representative) upon admission to the outpatient clinic or ward, or for planned admissions during the hospital appointment. All KDDL departments are part of the faculty workplace, where students of medical faculties and medical schools are taught, which is an integral part of the clinic's program. Therefore, we ask patients and their parents to understand. The patient or his / her legal representative gives written consent to the presence of students.
