Information for patients

Dear Patients,

by having a blood sample taken, we assume that you consent to this blood collection. Therefore, allow some information on blood collection:

  • follow your doctor's instructions before taking blood - some collections require fasting or following a certain diet;
  • pay attention to sufficient watering of the organism (mineral water, unsweetened teas, etc.);
  • if you are taking blood thinners, tell your healthcare professional;
  • after blood collection, it is essential to compress the injection site for at least 2 to 5 minutes to prevent hematoma (bruising) at the injection site;
  • on the day of collection, do not carry heavy things in the hand from which the collection was made, do not exercise.

Risk associated with the collection of blood from a vein are: slight or mild discomfort at the injection site, slight dizziness (the likelihood of occurrence may be reduced by adequate fluid intake - unsweetened drinks are recommended), pain, bruising or bleeding at the site where the blood was taken. The risk of infection at the injection site is minimal. As part of the prevention and minimization of the occurrence of these risks, established standard procedures and measures are followed.

Collection does not pose any increased risk to pregnant women.

If you experience any discomfort or difficulty after the procedure, tell your doctor.

Information for patients to perform oGTT
(oral glucose tolerance test - glycemic curves)

Test indication

Suspicion of impaired glucose tolerance or diabetes mellitus - increased fasting blood glucose (repeatedly between 5.60 - 6.99 mmol / l) differential diagnosis of hypoglycemia, glycosuria. In pregnant women suspected gestational diabetes mellitus, a history of childbirth weighing more than 4 kg.

Contraindications to the examination: a short time after discontinuation of treatment with diabetogenic drugs - must be omitted before the test for at least 3 weeks - determined by the attending physician.

Preparation before the examination

The diet of the person preparing for the test should be rich in carbohydrates for at least 3 days before the test.

The patient should consume the usual diet and adhere to the usual physical exertion.

Starvation before the test should last at least 8 hours. If possible, your doctor will advise you to skip some medicines.

Performing the test

The test is performed in the morning between 7 and 8 o'clock in the morning. The patient registers at the reception of the Collection Center. This is followed by drawing blood from a vein and, after evaluating the fasting glucose level, giving a drink with 75 g of glucose in 250 ml of water.

Glucose should not be given (the test is not further performed) if fasting blood glucose exceeds 7.0 mmol / l, in pregnant women 5.0 mmol / l. During the test, the patient maintains physical and mental calm, does not eat, drink or smoke.

After 1 hour (only in pregnant women) and 2 hours (in all patients) after the drink, another blood draw is taken from a vein.

At the specified time, the patient reports to the nurse who performed the 1st collection.

The total duration of the test is at least 2.5 hours.

The patient is monitored at all times, he does not leave the workplace of the Collection Center. The staff verifies that the patient has drunk the entire dose of the drink, monitors compliance with the regimen and any problems (nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, etc.). In case of difficulties, the patient must report these facts to the staff.
