Institute of Forensic Medicine and Toxicology - Toxicology

Workplace characteristics

Toxicological examinations of samples of patients' biological material (blood, urine, gastric lavage), or other samples related to the case (unknown fluid, powder) for clinical and forensic purposes are performed at the workplace. The basis is a systematic analysis for the presence of previously unknown nox (drugs, drugs and other xenobiotics) and their metabolites for the differential diagnosis of acute intoxications and the diagnosis of drug addiction. Levels of toxicologically important substances such as paracetamol, salicylates, antiepileptics, antidepressants, ethylene glycol, ethyl alcohol and others are monitored to monitor the effectiveness of therapy in intoxications. The level of carbonylhemoglobin in the blood during flue gas poisoning is also determined. Furthermore, various control examinations are performed to monitor the use of therapy (antihypertensives, hypolipidemics, NTBC, etc.) and abstinence from drugs in treatment cessation programs. The laboratory introduced the examination of pitch of newborns of mothers with suspected drug addiction to diagnose fetal exposure to drugs in utero. Mainly for forensic reasons, a hair analysis is performed, which clarifies the use of drugs even after a longer period of time, when they are no longer detectable in the blood or urine.

Our laboratory reliably detects hundreds to thousands of exogenous substances and their metabolites in urine (possibly in other biological material). We also determine serum concentrations in selected eighty analytes alone.

The Toxicology Department performs examinations not only for the General Hospital, but also for all medical facilities in Prague, in the Central Bohemian Region and, if necessary, for the entire country. The department provides a 24-hour emergency service. Requests for examinations from private individuals can be arranged both by phone and in person in normal daily operation.
