The task of the ENT is to provide specialized otorhinolaryngological care to patients from Prague and other areas of the Czech Republic, complete consulting activities for clinics and institutes of the General Hospital and superconsulting services for non-inpatient, especially private catchment facilities. The main programs of the department are pediatric, mostly one-day surgery (adenotomy, tonsillectomy, tympanostomy, auricle plastics, endoscopy). Furthermore, ear microsurgery and nasal surgery of children and adults, including functional and aesthetic surgery of the external nose - rhinoseptoplasty, endoscopic operations of the paranasal sinuses. Endoscopy of the airways and swallows and soft tissue surgery of the neck are common parts of the operation. The ENT department of the General Hospital closely cooperates with the Department of Otorhinolaryngology and Head and Neck Surgery of the Motol University Hospital and the First Medical Faculty of Charles University in pedagogical, scientific and medical preventive activities. Continuity in the care of oncological patients is ensured by cooperation with the oncological center of the Department of Otorhinolaryngology and Head and Neck Surgery of the Motol University Hospital and the 1st Medical Faculty of Charles University and VFN clinics dealing with oncological treatment. The ENT department performs classic and radiofrequency operations on patients with sleep apnea syndrome (OSAS). Together with the Sleep Laboratory of the Department of Neurology of the General Hospital and the Department of Dental Surgery, he has long been involved in research (grant projects) of sleep apnea syndrome. The program of endoscopic lacrimal surgery is successful, in which he participates together with doctors from the VFN Eye Clinic. The ENT department also performs radiofrequency operations in the nasal and oral cavities.
At the ENT department of the General Hospital in Prague, we have newly introduced a modern method of endoscopic removal of nasal tonsils in children with a Koblator plasma probe. This involves the gentle and safe removal of enlarged nasal tonsil tissue in the nasopharynx by the plasma field that forms at the end of the probe. The plasma field gently and effectively disrupts and aspirates the tissue. The plasma probe immediately stops any bleeding. The advantage of the method is less traumatization of the nasopharyngeal base and usually shorter healing time and less pain. More precise removal of nasal tonsil tissue minimizes the risk of regrowth.
The operation is performed under general anesthesia and the procedure lasts about 20 - 40 minutes. We will be happy to provide you with more detailed information and answers to your questions at our children's and general ENT clinic.
The non-surgical care of the department is focused on the diagnosis and treatment of acute and prolonged hearing, balance and tinnitus disorders, complete audiological examinations are performed, including superconciliary assessment activities. Within the ENT department, the Otonerurological Center of the General Hospital and an outpatient clinic work for the correction of hearing defects with hearing aids.
