Workplace characteristics

The Department of Gynecology and Obstetrics of the First Medical Faculty of Charles University and the General Hospital in Prague is located in the historic building of the former Provincial Maternity Hospital in Apolinářská Street. The basic tasks of this workplace include medical, pedagogical and scientific research work. The clinic has three main parts - gynecological, obstetric and neonatology. Both employees of the General Hospital and the 1st Medical Faculty of Charles University work here. The Gynecology and Obstetrics Clinic is one of the largest facilities of its kind in the Czech Republic and in Europe and is one of the largest parts of the General Hospital in Prague.

With its diagnostic and therapeutic activities, the clinic covers all subspecializations in the field of gynecology, obstetrics and neonatology. The key operations are perinatology and fetal medicine, together with neonatology, assisted reproduction center, endoscopy, oncogynecology and urogynecology.

The gynecological part focuses on the diagnosis and treatment of malignant tumors of the reproductive system and breast, diagnosis and treatment of urinary incontinence and pelvic floor reconstruction, diagnostic and surgical laparoscopy and hysteroscopy, surgical treatment of fibroids, endometriosis. Furthermore, the clinic deals with problems of marital infertility, including IVF, endocrinopathies, disorders of menopause. The gynecological part uses the Center for Fetal Medicine for diagnosis, ultrasound diagnostics of malignant pelvic tumors is unique.

The obstetric part deals with the issue of high-risk and pathological pregnancy, provides superconciliary care for pregnant women with diabetes, cardiopathy, Rh incompatibility, myasthenia gravis, multiple sclerosis and other pathologies in pregnancy. Pregnant women with beginning premature birth (transport in utero) are hospitalized here. The clinic is a superconciliary center for fetal medicine, it performs non-invasive and invasive prenatal diagnostics and fetal therapy in the whole breadth of this discipline, it is a superconciliary and reference center for ultrasound diagnostics in fetuses.

The neonatology part of the clinic provides complete care for newborns and is a superconciliary center for immature newborns, especially in the lowest weight categories. With its capacity and scope of care provided, it is one of the largest in the Czech Republic. The highest level of newborn care is provided in the workplace. Newborns of very low birth weight (ph <1500g) from the region of Prague and Central Bohemia and newborns of extremely low birth weight (ph <1000g) from the whole Czech Republic are concentrated here, as well as newborns with severe degrees of hemolytic disease based on Rh isoimmunization, hydropic fruits, newborns with fluidothorax, the most severe stages of intrauterine growth retardation, newborns of mothers after organ transplantation and mothers with drug abuse. The Center for Unconventional Pulmonary Ventilation of Newborns solves serious cases of respiratory failure in newborns from all over the Czech Republic. The incidence of bronchopulmonary dysplasia and immature retinopathy has fallen to values that are currently rarely achieved in world centers.
